What's with those Words?!

Here's a bit of a large post, just a spoiler alert here, it's a dictionary pretty much about the terminology involved in the BJD hobby, just to help y'all figure out the what the big deal is.

I don't have all of the abbreviations on here, there's still plenty of them out there and I don't profess to be an expert on the subject of language and the doll hobby.....but it's still a good starting point to check out if you want to learn something new~

#

1/3 - The largest size of doll often talked about, according to DenofAngels.com, the size of a 1/3 doll can be anywhere from 60 to 90cm tall, and are often called SDs or Super Dollfie. The earliest BJDs were around 60cm in height.

1/4 - These dolls are the mid-sized ones on the market and are known as MSD or Mini Super Dollfies. These are probably the most common dolls on the market right now. Dolls in this 1/4 size are around 45cm in height, not less than 31cm.

1/6 - The second smallest doll size out there, these dolls are often called Tiny, or YoSD (the Yo is a Japanese term for infant, followed by Super Dollfie). Tiny/YoSDs are generally between 15-30cm tall.

1/12 - These dolls are SMALL. So tiny! They are also called YoSD, but the difference is that they are any size up to 15cm in height. Dolls in this size tend to be more along the lines of animals like simply jointed cats and dogs, bunnies, etc.

A

ABJD - Asian Ball-Jointed Dolls - Specifically dolls that are designed and produced in Asian countries, it's also an elongated version of BJD and are interchangeable.

AFAIK - As Far As I Know. It's a shortened conversation acronym used fairly often on DenOfAngels.com

B

BJD - Ball Jointed Doll. They are ball-and-socket, articulated dolls held together with an internal structure of wire or -more commonly- thick elastic.

Blushing - The shading on the body of the doll that gives it more lifelike appearance. The sealant used on the body as well as the paints and colors help to prevent the doll from yellowing.

C

COA - Certificate of Authenticity. If you get a Legitimate doll from an established or new company that states it comes with a COA, that means that the doll is in the database of the company, that it isn't a recast(see below under R).

D

E

F

Face Up/Faceup - The coloration and makeups process of the face of the doll. From blushing the cheeks to highlighting and coloring the eyes, around the nose, the mouth, etc. Adding eyelashes, sticker/glue-on piercings, tattoos and more is also part of a faceup process.

G

H

J

K

L

LE - Limited Edition. Dolls that are labeled as limited edition means just that. There are only a certain number that are available, giving them a rarity and eventually an increased price depending on use/safe-keeping.

LF - Looking For. Seen in titles of people looking for a specific doll or part, you see this often in the Marketplace of Den of Angels and other sites.

M

MSD - Mini Super Dollfie. Dolls in this size are around 45cm in height, not less than 31cm and are often called 1/4s.

MSC - Mr. Super Clear. A very poisonous sealant popular for it's UV protection and even coating properties. Please do not ever use this spray without a good mask or preferably a respirator. Translations of the instructions and WHMIS code this stuff as essentially the same (though a different chemical compound so not identical) to inhaling asbestos, a very harmful substance that causes scarring in the lungs. Remember: If you can SMELL it, your mask isn't working right.

MIB/Mint In Box - Literally never taken from the box, it's brand spanking new. It may have been touched to adjust positioning for photo purposes, though that's not often the case.

Minifee - A very popular doll size/style from FairyLand Dolls, 1/4 size, with multiple faces/hands/breast sizes/leg styles available.

Mod/Modding - Anything to do with changing the original sculpt. From piercing the ears to elongating/shrinking the neck to fit a head better to adding fins or tails, different ear styles or even just changing the eye shape, a mod is anything to do with altering the original look of the doll.

N

NRFB - Never Removed From Box. Found this abbreviation on Den of Angels, though I've not personally seen this being used on it.

NS - Normal Skin. The skin color of the company that they classify as 'normal' is generally a pinkish or yellowish tone, warmer than any white skin color. Think someone who is Caucasian, pale with color undertones. White skin would be someone dunked in a vat of white paint.....

NSFW - Not Safe For Work. Often written in titles to let people know the contents aren't safe to view in public. Most often in the community it means that the doll is nude or shows nipple. Or the scenario the doll is photographed in is considered more 'adult'.

O

OOAK - One Of A Kind. There is literally just that one doll with that specific look/accessories/sculpt/etc.

OT - Off Topic. These are dolls that aren't -quite- BJDs. Dolls like this include Barbies, Monster High, Ever After High, and other dolls that I'll write about in another blog entry.

Q

R

Recast/Counterfeit - FAKES. Fakes, con artists, scammers, you name it. They are people who will buy a legitimate doll from a company or sculptor. They will then re-cast the doll in silicone or some other medium like plaster, make a new doll identical to the legitimate company's doll and sell the fake at a price that is substantially lower. BUT! And here's where things get a little tricky: The dolls that are remade are often made with TOXIC materials. The counterfeiter STEALS the design by re-casting the doll and selling it. I will explain more about this in future blog postings: ___Link to be Made___

S

SD - Super Dollfie. These are dolls that are generally around 60cm in height, up to 90cm. Big dolls.

Sueding/Suede - Ball Jointed Dolls are made from resin or ceramic, which doesn't hold against itself very well.

T

TL;DR - Too Long, Didn't Read. A shorthand note for people online who didn't read a long post to get the gist of an idea or question, but often still has a legitimate comment or response.

U

UFK - Unfinished Kit. The doll comes to you unstrung, without faceup or anything else. You put it together yourself.

V

W

WIP - Work In Progress. Crafters, artists, and owners all enjoy showing off their dolls, even if they are in the middle or just starting a faceup, new clothing ideas, accessory creations, etc. I show many of the WIPs here and on my Instagram.

WS - White Skin. This is the whitest skin tone that a company has, it's often called Paper White, Milk White, White Skin, etc.

WTT - Want To Trade. An abbreviation for someone wanting to trade their doll for another, or clothing/wigs/faceups/services related to the doll hobby for a doll.

WTS - Want To Sell. An abbreviation for someone wanting to sell their doll.

WTB - Want To Buy. An abbreviation for someone wanting to buy a doll.
